This week’s annular solar eclipse in the sign of Libra (21 degrees, 7 minutes) is sure to be a stunner for all those safely watching the sky event. (Don’t forget you need ISO-compliant specs, not your average shades!) In North, Central and South America, the eclipse will begin on October 14 (around 12:13 PM EDT), and is predicted to surround the Moon in a stunning fiery glow.
Solar eclipses can impact our sense of purpose, self, vitality and focus. The house in which an eclipse takes place foregrounds those themes for better or for worse, consistent with the natal placements that it activates. For cardinal signs this upcoming eclipse will trigger your angles; the houses of travel, spirituality, communications and health could be spotlighted for fixed-sign ascendants; and for mutable signs, expect issues surrounding friends, children, money, and creative enterprises to be up for grabs. If you’re trying to analyze the potential activations in your own chart, just note that the catalytic aspects — the square and opposition — as well as the conjunction to natal planets will be the most significant.
As we slide into the week we need to be mindful that eclipses bring destabilizing energy. Though I don’t fully subscribe to the crawl-under-a-blanket-until-it-passes guidance, I do try to keep meaningful activities to a minimum, since these were never the auspicious and empowering celestial events that the more modern astrological worldview subscribes to. I avoid initiating anything new and I take care if I’m out and about. People and events can occasionally be triggered in heightened and unpredictable ways.
On Sunday, October 8, rise and shine to fireworks. Mars in Libra forms a kinetic square to Pluto in Capricorn, increasing the likelihood of a volcanic eruption.
The growing tension between action and desire, relationships and ambition, may have been percolating in the days prior. Bottled frustrations, heightened by herculean efforts to keep petulant Mars at bay, may finally find their release.
With Pluto on steroids, stationing to turn direct on October 10, proportional responses may be harder to gauge. Collateral relationship damage could also be mammoth, so fall back on any calming coping mechanisms that help you handle potential landmines.
Few of us will capitalize on the benefic Moon-Jupiter square perfecting at 10:54 PM EDT. Those of us who hit the hay early may miss this window for emotionally intuitive and inspired action.

Though Monday, October 9, is light on major celestial aspects, a healing Moon-Chiron trine begins the day on a restorative note. The mea culpa energy could be strong under this signature; thankfully, Chiron in Aries understands the peril of staying quiet for too long.
Luna also meets up with lightning-rod Uranus at 4:36 PM EDT, inviting inspired ideas or enlightened pathways into our current trajectories. As the higher octave of Mercury, retrograde Uranus may help us to bridge connections between our past and our future. The apparent backwards motion can have us revisiting big ideas that never got off the ground. If this signature brings fleeting reconnections to wistful what-might-have-beens, Luna’s next stop in practical Virgo could have us contemplating feasibility in a new light.

The Moon enters Virgo at 8:02 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 10. Luna moves swiftly into a conjunction with Venus in the place of her fall. Our desires may be further highlighted with both planets potentially making us feel uneasy in matters pertaining to home, family, friends or even finances. The opposition to retrograde Saturn could see concerns amplified. We may perceive our present circumstances to be more dire than they really are; recent events may feel out of our control, with constructive solutions limited. Venus, however, could get a little aid from being in Mercury’s generosity — a silver lining, which could help us intellectually and emotionally intuit our way out of present pickles.
Pluto also stations direct well after the sun goes down. Though subtle, it’s direction shift is a watershed in the longer Pluto-in-Aquarius storyline. As we prepare for its more committed entry into the water-bearer’s sign, we may be asked to confront the lessons learned during Pluto’s stay in Capricorn — including this latest round of sea-goat-ruled do-overs. Cardinal placements may have particular insights to share as Pluto hammered their angular houses.

On Wednesday, October 11, under the abating effects of a Sun-Chiron opposition, the trine between the Moon and Jupiter is a light in the darkness. Current money or relationship woes could be put into perspective, having us ask whether things are really as bleak as Saturn may have made them out to be.

Mars leaves appeasing Libra and enters its empowered domicile at 12:04 AM EDT on Thursday, October 12. This is the sign that Mars prefers, where watery Scorpio cools its natural fire, helping the God of War hone its strategic capacity. Until November 24, expect sharpened spears and a little subversion, since Scorpionic Mars doesn’t show all its cards in the same way that impulsive Aries Mars is apt to do.
The trine between Mars in Scorpio and retrograde Saturn in Pisces may help us keep our secrets, while the Greater Malefic aids us in contemplating the long-game and understanding the hard work we need to put in to realize our goals. This may be a particularly helpful signature to ease into Friday, October 13 under. The practical bent and tactical prowess of Mars could help us clear the dockets, while Saturn keeps our nose to the grindstone.

The annular solar eclipse New Moon taking place in Libra is sure to make Saturday, October 14 feel a little unpredictable. Within a wide-orb of conjunction to Mercury, this lunation could present as a cerebral affair, heightening our mental energies and even mental anxieties.
While a straight natural astrological read of the houses defaults us to an emphasis on relationships, balance, justice and fairness, it’s crucial that we examine our own charts to understand the topical area under Libra’s auspices. The Venusian energies and impetuses will invariably manifest themselves in more specific areas of personal experience, while the New Moon signals opportunities to seed new beginnings.
Despite being neither an evolutionary nor psychological astrologer, I frequently find the wisdom of Dane Rudhyar essential in contemplating the significance of the “soli-lunar relationship.” It’s easy to default into the archetypal shorthand that we’ve come to associate with the Moon’s hard aspects, while losing sight that the Moon’s significations are drawn from the contrapuntal relationship that it has to Sol. How are we individualizing in relation to collective expectations? What did the recent waning phase of the moon teach us about “creative meaning”? What do we want to manifest now and what is the emotional payoff?
This lunation also opposes retrograde Chiron and retrograde Eris in Aries, contributing to a spikier feeling of isolation in present relationships. We may perceive discordant receptions of our desires, or assume that others are bent upon clipping our wings. With the lunation in Libra, we may find relationships under the microscope, querying the extent to which they are healthy and constructive for us. With the lunation’s ruler, Venus, in eagle-eye Virgo, we may be more apt to take a critical look at those specific questions.
