Weekly Astrology Forecast for May 21–27, 2023* - Feel the Burn!

Hey star-gazers! Welcome to the penultimate week of May —it boggles my mind how fast this year is passing!

I thought I’d share my most recent purchase — a copy of The Orphic Hymns. Likely penned around the third-century CE, this text contains devotionals to a veritable Who’s Who of the Greek pantheon. If you haven’t come across them before, they’re essential reading for anyone interested in ancient Greek mysticism and religion. Personally, I think they’re a worthwhile investment for astrological enthusiasts, especially anyone dabbling in planetary remediation, or simply cultivating a more in-tune relationship with the major celestial energies moving through our lives.

You can access a free version on Archive.org (which I had been doing for a dog’s age), but as part of my ongoing efforts to work more consciously with the state of Mercury in my chart, the $11 expense seemed worth it.

With the Sun entering Gemini this week, I thought I’d offer up a few lines for anyone who might find themselves basking under Sol’s warm glow. If the magnificence of the golden orb strikes you as especially awe-inspiring, here are a few stanzas from Hymn VIII to inspire meditation:

Hear, golden Titan, whose eternal eye With matchless sight illumines all the sky. Native, unwearied in diffusing light, And to all eyes the object of delight: Lord of the Season, beaming light from far, Sonorous, dancing in thy four-yok’d car. […] Agile and vig’rous, venerable Sun, Fiery and bright around the heav’ns you run, Foe to the wicked, but the good man’s guide, O’er all his steps propitious you preside. […] Faithful defender, and the eye of right, Of steeds the ruler, and of life the light: With sounding whip four fiery steeds you guide, When in the glittering car of day you ride, Propitious on these mystic labours shine, And bless thy supplicants with a life divine.

With that poetic interlude — and hoping that Sun-in-Gemini season blesses all of us with a life divine! — let’s tackle the planetary energies of the week!

We begin the week under the influences of a separating, albeit still operative opposition between Mars in Leo and retrograde Pluto in Aquarius. The high-octane and potentially volatile nature of both planets could invite conflict when we might desire peace. Although this transit may inspire you to work harder at personally meaningful endeavours, you could meet with resistance from nay-sayers seeking to undermine your confidence. Retrograde Pluto could also have you confronting people from your past who may have been especially unsupportive. Sidestep any power struggles as best you can so you don’t lose focus.

This is also a great time to channel energies into personally meaningful projects because the Sun enters Gemini on May 21. Although the Sun is largely peregrine until the late degrees of the sign, its trine to Pluto and sextile to Mars will inspire us to take empowered action. While the energies may feel like they’re running high, the sextile between Vesta in Taurus and Venus in Cancer, perfecting on May 22, could help temper some of this high-octane drive.

However, the Sun hitting the most social sign in the zodiac may have us making the most of its transit, soaking up information and buzzing about like bees in a social hive. Under the Sun’s four-week journey, consider how to harness the illumination it brings to achieve greater clarity and purpose in all those Geminian topics in your life. Think learning, reading, skill-development, networking and cultivating a sense of expanded community.

On May 23, Mars in Leo squares Jupiter in Taurus, heightening the intrepid energies of bold, brave adventure.

Jupiter can expand your goal-oriented nature, add to your sense of empowerment, or simply imbue you with unexpected optimism. If you’re contemplating new ventures, then try to avoid the void of course Moon — one taking place from the wee hours of May 24 to around 11 a.m. EDT that day, and the other, significantly longer, making all of May 26 a bit of a write-off.

Ultimately, take care not to overextend yourself under this transit — something that this configuration could very well see you fall victim to as Mars squares the amplifying North Node on May 24.

The square between Venus in Cancer and Chiron in Aries could bring a few wounds to the fore around personal identity and self-determination in the face of family relationships. Given the other significantly empowering energies concurrent in the sky, this aspect may be little more than a small emotional blip, but one which could nevertheless present itself for some individuals out there.

On May 26, Venus in Cancer sextiles Uranus in Taurus, ensuring that you avoid all work and no play. This configuration could see you taking a break from the predictable drudgery of the day-to-day. And while Venus may want to hunker down at home, “you-can’t-make-me” Uranus could invite big expenditures and luxury purchases that have you pampering yourself. This is the transit for hitting the spa at the last minute if they have a cancellation, gathering with friends, or finding new ways of nurturing your soul to counteract the go-go-go energies of Mars and the Sun.

On May 27, Jupiter in Taurus conjuncts the Node of Fate, which is a highly auspicious transit. I might even go so far as considering this one of the more fortunate days this month, which could open doors for you, extend synchronicities and present unexpected but beneficial opportunities for your highest growth, development and, in some instances, financial benefit.

Overall, this is a sparkling week in many respects — our energies will run high, but that’s a good thing, especially in the face of Jupiterian beneficence!
